How it's formed | Desert roses are formed when gypsum crystals grow in a dry environment with seasonal water fluctuations and a large source of calcium sulfate. The crystals grow in a process similar to hydraulic fracturing, where water containing dissolved calcium sulfate flows in, and water evaporates out. The gypsum attracts sand grains, which cluster together and harden into the individual "petals" of the desert rose.
